Covelong (Kovalam) beach, Chennai: a visitor's guide
Search for "Kovalam beach" and half the results are about Kerala. This guide is about the other Kovalam: the fishing village on Chennai's East Coast Road, also called Covelong. It is one of the cleanest, calmest and most interesting beaches within reach of the city.

Where it is
Kovalam sits on the Coromandel Coast about 40 km south of central Chennai, on the way to Mahabalipuram. Lonely Planet notes that city bus 599 runs from the T Nagar depot in about an hour, and that routes 109 and 119 also pass through. Most visitors drive down ECR.
A Blue Flag beach
In 2021 Kovalam became Tamil Nadu's pilot site for the international Blue Flag programme and received its first certification that September. In November 2025 it kept the certification for a fifth year in a row, for 2025–26. In practice this means:
- Trained lifeguards on watch and surveillance systems
- Restrooms and changing rooms
- Shaded bamboo shelters and lounge chairs for day visitors
- Floating wheelchairs, so visitors with disabilities can get into the water safely. This is rare on Indian beaches.
Sunrise on the Bay of Bengal
Kovalam faces the Bay of Bengal, so the sun comes up straight out of the sea. That makes this beach a sunrise place first and a sunset place second. Be on the sand about 20 minutes before sunrise for the best colour. You'll see the fishing boats on the shore and the village already awake. Walkers are out by 6:30 AM. Local fishermen sometimes take visitors out in their boats. If you want to try it, agree the details and safety with them first.
Surfing and water sports
Kovalam is the best-known surf spot near Chennai. Its gentle cove waves suit beginners, and the point breaks further out suit experienced surfers. Surf schools on the beach, including Bay of Life, Covelong Point and Ocean Delight, teach surfing. Some also teach paddleboarding and kayaking. Read our full surfing guide before you book a lesson.
A little history
Covelong has a longer story than most beach villages:
- 1719: it became a trading settlement with the Nawab of the Carnatic's permission.
- 1746: French troops occupied it.
- 1752: British forces under Robert Clive destroyed its fortifications.
The old fortified site is now part of the Fisherman's Cove resort. The Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, established in 1808, is the village's historic landmark and is worth a quiet visit.
Nearby, within a short drive
- Nithyakalyana Perumal temple, Thiruvidanthai. One of the 108 Divya Desam Vishnu temples, on ECR. It is open 6:30 AM to 12 noon and 3 PM to 9 PM.
- Muttukadu boat house. Rowing, pedal and speedboats on the backwaters, run by TTDC.
- DakshinaChitra. A heritage museum of reconstructed South Indian homes. It is open 10 AM to 6 PM and closed on Tuesdays.
- Mahabalipuram. The UNESCO-listed Pallava monuments, further south on ECR. See our Mahabalipuram day trip guide.
Beach tips
- Swimming: go in only where lifeguards are on duty, and follow their flags.
- Respect the village: it is a working fishing community. Don't step over nets or climb on boats without asking.
- Take your rubbish home. The Blue Flag status depends on it.
- Bring sunscreen, a hat and water. Shade on the sand is limited by midday.
