A Blue Flag certified beach and an old fishing village, about 50 m from the villa. Lovely for sunrise walks; the fishing boats come in early in the morning.

Good to know: Currents can be strong. Swim only where it is calm and lifeguards are on duty.

Surfing and paddle boarding

Kovalam is Chennai's nearest surf break and is known as India's first surfing village. Bay of Life, Tamil Nadu's accredited surf school, gives beginner surf and stand-up paddle lessons on this beach.

Good to know: Book a lesson a day or two ahead.

Nithya Kalyana Perumal Temple, Thiruvidanthai

An ancient Vishnu temple in the next village south, one of the 108 Divya Desams. Couples come here to pray for marriage.

Good to know: Open 6:30 AM–12 noon and 3–9 PM. Remove shoes and cover shoulders and knees.

Muttukadu Boat House

Rowing, pedal and speed boats on the Muttukadu backwaters, run by Tamil Nadu Tourism. Best in the late afternoon.

DakshinaChitra heritage museum

A living museum of real South Indian homes moved here from four states, with craft demonstrations, pottery and a good café.

Good to know: Closed Tuesdays. 10 AM–6 PM (weekends to 7 PM). Tickets: ₹350 for overseas visitors, ₹200 for Indian adults.

Madras Crocodile Bank

Reptile park and conservation centre with crocodiles, alligators, turtles and snakes from around the world. A night safari runs in the evening.

A Pallava-era rock-cut shrine by the sea, its entrance framed by carved tiger heads. Quiet, shady and right on the way to Mahabalipuram.

Shore Temple

An 8th-century granite temple standing at the edge of the sea, the best-known monument of Mahabalipuram. Beautiful at sunrise and in the late afternoon.

Good to know: Open sunrise to sunset. Archaeological Survey of India ticket: foreigners ₹600 cash / ₹550 online; Indians ₹40 / ₹35.

Arjuna's Penance

A huge open-air rock relief, also called the Descent of the Ganges, carved with gods, people, elephants and animals. Nearby is Krishna's Butterball, a giant balancing boulder.

Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas)

Five temples, each carved from a single piece of rock in the 7th century, with life-size stone elephant and lion sculptures.

The Vedagiriswarar Shiva temple sits on a rocky hill about 15 km inland from Mahabalipuram, with wide views over the countryside.
