A Mahabalipuram day trip from Kovalam, ECR
Most Mahabalipuram day trips start in Chennai city. That means an early alarm, a slow crawl through the southern suburbs and a long drive home in the evening. Start from Kovalam instead and the day gets much easier. Kovalam is about 40 km south of central Chennai, and the monuments are about 60 km from the city. So you begin roughly 20 km away, with the city traffic already behind you.

What you are going to see
The Group of Monuments at Mahabalipuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1984. The Pallava kings carved these temples and reliefs out of the coastal rock in the 7th and 8th centuries. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) manages the site. These are the stops that matter:
- Shore Temple. A granite temple at the very edge of the sea, attributed to King Rajasimha in the early 8th century. Its main tower rises about 18 m in five tiers. Go early or late, when the light is softer.
- Arjuna's Penance (Descent of the Ganges). One of the largest open-air rock reliefs in the world, carved across two huge boulders about 27 m long and 9 m high. It is crowded with gods, people and elephants.
- Krishna's Butterball. A giant granite boulder that seems to balance impossibly on a slope. It is the trip's most popular photo.
- Pancha Rathas (Five Rathas). Five 7th-century temples, each carved from a single rock in the shape of a processional chariot. They are named after the five Pandava brothers of the Mahabharata, though they were not built as Pandava shrines.
- The old lighthouse. The Olakkanesvara temple above the Mahishamardini cave was later used by the British as a lighthouse. Climb the hill for views over the town and the sea.
- Tiger Cave, Saluvankuppam. An 8th-century Pallava rock-cut shrine about 5 km before the town, its entrance framed by carved tiger heads. It is quiet, maintained by the ASI and a good first stop.
Timings and tickets
The monuments are open from sunrise to sunset. The Archaeological Survey of India's ticket prices are:
- Indian, SAARC and BIMSTEC visitors: ₹40 at the counter, ₹35 online
- Other foreign visitors: ₹600 at the counter, ₹550 online
Source: ASI "Must See" Mahabalipuram page. Travel writers note that one ticket covers the ticketed monuments for the whole day, and that most sites are within walking distance of each other. Allow four to five hours and carry water. Late morning to mid-afternoon is hot and busy.
A smart route from Bruno Villa
If you're staying two nights, make the middle day your Mahabalipuram day:
- Leave the villa around 6:30 AM.
- Stop at Tiger Cave on the way.
- Reach the Shore Temple while the light is still soft.
- Walk to Arjuna's Penance, Krishna's Butterball and the lighthouse.
- See the Pancha Rathas last.
- Have lunch in town, then come back for a long afternoon by the pool.
- Watch sunset from the rooftop sea-view terrace.
If you're driving down from Chennai on arrival day, use the timings in your favour. Check-in is from 2 PM, so drive straight past Kovalam to Mahabalipuram in the morning. See the monuments, and come back north to check in after lunch.
For a slower morning closer to the villa, visit the Nithyakalyana Perumal temple at Thiruvidanthai on ECR. It is one of the 108 Divya Desam Vishnu temples and is open 6:30 AM to 12 noon and 3 PM to 9 PM.
Tips
- Dress for temples: cover shoulders and knees, and wear sandals that are easy to slip off.
- Hire an approved guide at the entrance if you want the stories behind the carvings. The reliefs make much more sense with someone explaining them.
- Buy stone carvings from the established workshops in town rather than from street sellers.
- Keep the evening free. After a morning of granite and sun, the best plan is a swim and a BBQ in the garden. Bring your groceries and our cook (₹1,000 per meal) will handle dinner.
