The best sunrise spots on ECR

The East Coast Road faces the Bay of Bengal, so the sun rises straight out of the sea. Here are five places near Kovalam to watch it, when to be there, and how to turn an early start into a slow coastal morning.

The best sunrise spots on ECR

Why ECR is made for sunrises

The East Coast Road runs along the Bay of Bengal, so almost every beach on it looks straight out to the east. On a clear morning the sun comes up out of the sea, not behind buildings.

Here are five good places to watch the sun come up near Kovalam (Covelong), from the laziest option to the most memorable.

When the sun comes up

Sunrise near Chennai moves by less than an hour across the year. The earliest is around 5:41 AM at the end of May, and the latest is around 6:35 AM in late January. In November it rises between about 6:02 AM and 6:14 AM.

The sky starts to glow 20 to 30 minutes before the sun appears, and that is often the best part. Check the exact time for your date the night before, set an alarm, and aim to be in place a little early.

1. A rooftop with a sea view

The easiest sunrise is the one you can watch with a cup of coffee in your hand. At Bruno Villa the rooftop terrace looks out towards the sea, so you can watch the sky change colour without leaving the house.

2. Kovalam (Covelong) beach

Kovalam beach is the classic choice, and it is a short walk from the villa. The beach takes its name from the old fishing village of Covelong, and fishing is still the main work here, so mornings are lively with boats and nets along the shore.

Kovalam holds the international Blue Flag certification for clean, safe beaches. It was first certified in 2021 and was certified for a fifth year in a row for 2025–26. The Blue Flag stretch has a marked swimming zone, lifeguards, toilets, showers and shaded seating. Note that visitors are allowed on this section from 6 AM to 6 PM, so on summer mornings, when the sun rises before six, the light show may start before the gates open. If you plan a dip after sunrise, use the marked swimming zone, where lifeguards are on duty.

3. Muttukadu backwaters at first light

A few minutes' drive north of Kovalam, the Muttukadu backwater meets the sea. Early morning is the quietest time here, and this is also bird season. In late September 2026, birdwatchers counted more than 1,000 little stints, 430 greater flamingos and over 890 garganeys around the Muttukadu–Nemmeli estuary, with numbers expected to grow through the October migration.

Bring binoculars and watch from the shore. The TTDC boat house does not open until 9 AM, so a sunrise visit is about the light and the birds, not a boat ride.

4. Tiger Cave, Saluvankuppam

Tiger Cave (the Yali Mandapam) is a small rock-cut temple on the coast at Saluvankuppam, about 5 km from Mahabalipuram on the road towards Kovalam. It takes its name from the carved tiger heads around the cave entrance and dates from the Pallava period, around the 8th century. The Archaeological Survey of India looks after it.

Because it sits right beside the Bay of Bengal, the carved rock and the sea make a striking frame for early light. Opening hours are not clearly published, so check at the site before you plan around it. It works well as a first stop on the way to Mahabalipuram.

5. Shore Temple, Mahabalipuram

The Shore Temple is the most famous sunrise on ECR. It stands at the edge of the sea and is part of the Mahabalipuram monuments, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1984. The main temple faces east, so the first rays reach the shrine. It was built in the time of the Pallava king Rajasimha, around the early 8th century.

The temple opens at 6 AM. In the winter months that is very close to sunrise, so be at the gate when it opens and buy your ticket there. From April to August the sun is up before the gates open, so watch from the beach beside the temple instead and go in afterwards. For more ideas, see our Mahabalipuram day trip guide.

Tips for an early start

  • Lay things out the night before. Shoes, a light jacket for breezy winter mornings, water and a torch for the walk in the dark.
  • Look at the forecast. A few clouds on the horizon often make the colours better. A thick grey sky usually means no show.
  • Respect the fishing village. Boats, nets and the morning catch are people's work. Ask before you photograph anyone.
  • Plan breakfast. Come back to a slow breakfast by the pool. A cook can be arranged on request if you bring the groceries.

Make a morning of it at Bruno Villa

Watching the sun rise is easiest when you sleep by the sea. Bruno Villa is a new private 3-bedroom pool villa on Casurina Bay Drive in Kovalam, a short walk from the beach, with a sea-view rooftop terrace, a private pool and a lit garden for the evening before. It sleeps up to 10 guests. If you would like to start a weekend with an ECR sunrise, send us your dates on WhatsApp through the website and we will help you plan it.
